David Newman, Ray Charles Presents David 'Fathead' Newman (1960) |
Wednesday's lunch record is by David 'Fathead' Newman. This was his debut album recorded on Atlantic records. David was the tenor sax player in Ray Charles's band and was a standout musician. His strong soloist ability was recognized on the bandstand along with his studio work. These tracks are rooted in solid blues with a jazz feeling. Ray Charles (piano), Bernie Crawford (baritone sax), Marcus Belgrave (trumpet), Edgar Willis (bass) and Milton Turner (drums). The YouTube sample song is "Weird Beard"
