Gene Ammons, The Black Cat (1971)
Thursday's lunch record is "Gene Ammons, The Black Cat" (1971). An absolutely stunning jazz-soul masterpiece from the man with the big tenor sax. This album sounds as if it ccould have been recorded yesterday. This is a timeless work of art. The talented musicians with Gene are George Freeman (guitar), Harod Mabern (piano, electric piano), Ron Carter (bass) and Idris Muhammad (drums). Plenty of straight ahead main-stream jazz with a funk blues flavor. The YouTube sample song is "The Black Cat" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nBR7M0p3Dw . . . bucko
